What the web app manifest does

The web app manifest tells browsers how to install your site as an app, including icon sizes 192×192 and 512×512, theme colors, and display mode.

Without a valid manifest and correctly sized icons, Add to Home Screen flows may fall back to low-quality screenshots instead of your brand mark.

Maskable vs standard icons

Maskable icons need extra padding so Android adaptive icons do not crop important content. Keep logos centered with safe margins inside a square canvas.

Standard icons can fill more of the frame but may look cropped on some Android launchers. Shipping both 192 and 512 PNG sizes covers most install scenarios.

Validate on real devices

Always test on a real device after deploying — emulators do not always match production behavior for install prompts and icon rendering.

Use the favicon checker to confirm manifest JSON, icon paths, and MIME types before sharing your PWA with users.
