Why favicons still matter in 2025

Favicons are the small icons that appear in browser tabs, bookmarks, search results, and mobile home screens. They are often the first visual touchpoint users have with your brand — and a missing or blurry icon can make even a polished site feel unfinished.

Modern browsers expect more than a single favicon.ico file. A complete setup covers legacy desktop browsers, high-DPI displays, iOS home screens, Android install prompts, and Progressive Web Apps.

Formats and sizes you should ship

A modern favicon setup includes multiple formats: ICO for legacy support, PNG for specific sizes, SVG for crisp scaling, Apple touch icons for iOS, and a web manifest for Android PWAs.

At minimum, deploy favicon.ico, favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png, apple-touch-icon.png, android-chrome-192x192.png, android-chrome-512x512.png, and site.webmanifest. Optional but recommended: favicon.svg for browsers that support vector tab icons.

Start with a square source image at least 512×512 pixels. Simple, high-contrast designs work best when scaled down to 16×16.

HTML tags and deployment

Place generated files in your site root or public folder, then reference them with link tags in your document head. Include both PNG sizes and the Apple touch icon so iOS and Android behave predictably.
